Trio based in Manchester

Elio Gaviria  piano
Jack Callaghan  violin
Rhys Nicholson  cello

The Morelia Piano Trio, formed in 2024 by English violinist Jack Callaghan, Welsh cellist Rhys Nicholson, and American pianist Elio Gaviria, is a dynamic chamber ensemble based in Manchester, England. The trio’s members are currently fourth-year undergraduates at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), where they have quickly distinguished themselves through performances of exceptional musical and interpretive depth.

In 2025, the Morelia Piano Trio won the RNCM Nossek Prize and the RNCM Christopher Rowland Chamber Ensemble of the Year Award for their performances of Smetana’s Piano Trio. Following this success, they were selected to perform at the RNCM Donors’ Concert, presenting Debussy’s Piano Trio. In 2026, the trio will represent the RNCM in prestigious recitals at the Royal Overseas League and Wigmore Hall in London.

Alongside their work as an ensemble, each member maintains an active solo career. Cellist Rhys Nicholson was a finalist in the 2025 Barbirolli Cello Prize and has performed Roxanna Panufnik’s All Shall Be Well at Wigmore Hall. Violinist Jack Callaghan regularly appears as a concerto soloist, including performances of Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending at the Manchester Museum. Pianist Elio Gaviria has appeared on From the Top Radio Show and is a recipient of the Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award.

Individually, the trio’s members have performed with major orchestras, including Elio’s collaboration with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for its Latino Alliance Concert, and Jack and Rhys’s participation in schemes with the Manchester Camerata and BBC Philharmonic.

While studying at the RNCM, the Morelia Piano Trio has received coaching from distinguished artists including Kathryn Stott, Petr Prause, Jeremy Young, and Benjamin Frith, and regularly presents engaging, thoughtfully curated recital programmes across the UK.
